Self-custody
On Polymarket, connecting MetaMask gives you self-custody. Email signup uses a managed (multi-sig) wallet, which is not full self-custody.

Self-custody means you hold the private keys to your own crypto, without any third party having access.
Plain-English explanation
Self-custody has two sides: (1) nobody can freeze or seize your funds; (2) if you lose your keys, nobody can help you recover. For serious capital, self-custody with a hardware wallet is recommended. For casual use, a managed wallet is easier.
